Artist Statement
The contrasts and analogies that are present in my work help the viewer and myself examine incoporeal concepts of a spiritual, psychological, and mental nature. To better understand the intangible I build up a very physical, familiar, visual vocabulary.
My work is interdisciplanary. I am primarily a digital artist with a photographic background, yet my ideas have been expressed through mixed media and installations as well. I have utilized mediums such as digital prints, found objects, video, and photography. The symbols I choose are common objects, spaces, or forms that often already carry associations and meaning. Through my presentation and treatment of them I ask the viewer to rethink their preconceptions and use these familiar images as touchstones to explore concepts that cannot be seen. In my work the body is a container for the soul, the open space of a field an analogy for memory and energy, a small ceramic pot a safe container for growth, and maps used to chart moments in time. Each piece I create tells a story, sometimes personal, sometimes specific, other times general, but each time a story about exploration, growth, and experience.
